WW2 Enlisted man's dress coat - What buttons to look for?

Hi all,

I just purchased a WW2 enlisted man's dress coat with holes for removable buttons. It came without the buttons, so I'm looking for a replacement set. Tag dated to March 1942 and it has brass belt hooks.

My question is, which buttons would be appropriate for this time frame? I have attached more modern ones as a stopgap but it looks pretty funky (too gold and shiny). I'd love to see some front and back images of whatever you all would recommend....

Thanks!

Tom

Hey Patches...

Its missing all of them. I just want to be sure I'm getting the right ones for the era.

Nice teeth, by the way......

Right LOL, that of course is Walter Matthau in Dennis the Menace, real funny scene.

Have several sets of WW2 buttons off damaged uniforms. If you need the split pins or rings for the buttons most hobby or larger sewing/craft stores or stores with sewing departments will have the split rings or split pins for button attachment.Even have seen the rings in places that specialize in supplies to people who make jewelry.

That must have been one of the last contracts to have the brass belt supports still sewn in. If you are going to display it as a 1942 coat, remember they used a black tie before they went to the khaki one.

Hi all... Thanks for the replies!

Patches... I had forgotten about the Dennis the Menace film. Yep, it was a great scene. Matthau was in a bunch of memorable films... The Odd Couple is at the top of my list.

Doyler... I found split pins at our local hardware store. I hadn't thought about looking in hobby and crafts stores... Great suggestion!

Larry/US82Bravo... Return PM sent, thanks!

P-40 Warhawk... Thanks for the info. I have a copy of the Golden Gate Guardian (SF Presidio post newspaper) from April 4, 1942 that mentions that the OD neckties "were coming soon". So yes, a black necktie would be appropriate for display purposes.

Tom,

If you want the buttons, you'll need to send me your address. It was not included in the PM response you sent.

PM your address.
