lakenormanusa Posted August 21, 2019 Share #1 Posted August 21, 2019 Hello all! Wanted to see if anyone can ID the ribbon shown on the left side, top row. Thanks!
RustyCanteen Posted August 21, 2019 Share #2 Posted August 21, 2019 Either a Navy Cross, or the person that colorized the photo mistakenly used the wrong colors on a US Coast Guard good conduct ribbon.
lakenormanusa Posted August 21, 2019 Author Share #3 Posted August 21, 2019 Next to it looks like the WWII Victory Medal with a star device. I wondered about the star and found out they were added to denote combat service.
flyboy53 Posted August 21, 2019 Share #4 Posted August 21, 2019 Neither. The white strip is off center. That's the Philippine Liberation Medal improperly colored blue instead of red.
RustyCanteen Posted August 21, 2019 Share #5 Posted August 21, 2019 I thought about that too. Hard to tell with these what the original color was. Sometimes the painted colors cover the original details depending on the skill and knowledge of the person doing it. One thing you can tell, he had a record to be proud of! Two theater veteran. lakenormanusa Posted August 21, 2019 Author Share #6 Posted August 21, 2019 If it's the Phillipine Liberation medal, it's strange how far off the colorization would have to be when you take into consideration how close the coloring is on the other ribbons which are far more intricate. lettow Posted August 22, 2019 Share #8 Posted August 22, 2019 Since the ribbons are out of order, is it possibly the Korean Service Medal?
lakenormanusa Posted August 22, 2019 Author Share #9 Posted August 22, 2019 Since the ribbons are out of order, is it possibly the Korean Service Medal? It does look like it, but I think the photo is pre-Korean War.
RustyCanteen Posted August 22, 2019 Share #10 Posted August 22, 2019 For what it's worth, the hat appears (if you look closely you can see the letter 'y' just over the hair) to be a 'U.S. NAVY' tally flat hat; not a Coast Guard version. So we can rule out the USCG GCM. I do not suppose there is a name on the back of the photo?

(finger's crossed) Like you originally stated, I also thought it could be the Navy Cross. Thanks for taking a looking at it and providing your thoughts.
