D bail find?

I showed it to my buddy and he said, Yea, that will fail all the test. But, Ill show and tell anyway. At our local antique engine show, one of the antique vendors had these two helmets for sale, marked $50 each. Each had been adorned with chalk by the same juvenile hand playing soldier. One is a decent front seam, fixed bail with the straps and a heat lot number of 224C. The other a front seam, D bail with one standard, later war green strap with non-original bar tacking. As you can see, both the bails have been reattached with huge globs of metal, and one looks like it has some type of rivets visible on the outside. It is very difficult to read the heat stamp on this one, but looks to be 188C or 1886, or 886? It is very hard to read, Ill have to try to get a better photo. It has paint damage from when it was repaired, many stress cracks and age. It really asks many more questions than it answers. Obviously, the strap is a replacement, it has been repainted at least once, but not so obvious is when and by whom it was repaired? It is probably worth the money just to see what the conversation here will be. Thanks for looking at the following photos, comments welcome! It will take several replies to post all the photos.

Those arent rivets, that's the metal from the repairs having melted through the manganese steel. Whoever repaired it sure as heck put a lot more heat on those feet than needed, but that's one way to make sure they stay on! Super cool finds.

Thanks for all the great comments. Seller got it from a person who sells them items from their families collections. Not sure if it can be Veteran ID'd. Probably a "rabbit hole" to try to trace down. I've bought military items from this vendor several times for a few years. I think last year I got an M-14 trigger group from him or the year before. I actually thought it a an M-1 group, then looked closer. Vendor carries a better quality line of items, not flea market crap.

PS As far as the rank, it is almost the same as Corporal/Captain. :)
