338thRCT Posted August 16, 2019 Share #1 Posted August 16, 2019 The first M1 I've found in a really long time. Has rear seam and appears to be maybe a KW repaint. Color is darker than it appears in pictures. Has swivel loops. Khaki sewn on chinstrap with painted brass hardware without the raised lip as with the older models.. I figured it would have had black painted steel chinstrap hardware and green strap, but I suppose they used what was on hand at the factory. What is the significance of number stenciled on front ? First picture is most accurate as far as true color.
Mr.Jerry Posted August 16, 2019 Share #2 Posted August 16, 2019 Number looks like his laundry number stamped on there. You might be able to find him from that.
Nickman983 Posted August 16, 2019 Share #3 Posted August 16, 2019 Here's a possible list based on the laundry number, I believe these guys are all WWII enlistees though http://wwii-enlistment.com/search/?q=b6854&select=laundryNumber&quick-search=1 As for the chinstrap hardware, I believe (though I'm not certain) that new hardware was dumped on top of old hardware in the factory, which could explain the chinstraps/buckle. For example, I have a very late WWII McCord with OD#3 chinstraps, the double hook for the T1 conversion, and a raised bar, stamped brass buckle. MattS Posted August 16, 2019 Share #4 Posted August 16, 2019 Yep, laundry number (first letter of the last name plus last 4 digits of his Army Serial Number).
