My dad was in the 11th ACR from 1959 - 63 and had a very similar jacket. Don't know if he still has it, but I don't think so. I don't think his had an SSI on the sleeve since the 11th ACR didn't get it's own SSI until they went to Vietnam IIRC.

Id think the sleeve pocket would be for writing utensils. Cigarettes would break in the lower sleeve. Cool jacket I think this style was popular in Europe

Thanks for the comments.

The lower pocket has (2)slots for pencils/pens.Has a side zipper.Very similar to pocket on the MA1/L2B flight jackets and flight suits etc.

Doyler, please explain " Name tape is sewn to a black wool base."

The use of the Subdued NAME tape with a full color U.S. ARMY tape will date this from July or so 1966 till July or so 1967, with a stretch into 1968, at this time U.S. ARMY tapes are to be Subdued like the NAME tapes, but still with full color shoulder patches and ranks and skill badges.

The rayon US Army gold on black is actually sewn to a piece of black wool the blackwall is sewn to the jacket. The black wall is actually longer than the name tape I'm assuming they sold the name tape to something to give it more support on the jacket

Hmm, a most unusual application, we heard about some GIs having had sewn the newly required Subdued U.S. ARMY tape right over the Full Color one, but not this. Curious it's only on the one side this backng and not under the NAME tape on the other, would you think the Wool tape is a U.S. ARMY tape too, a West German made one??? Odd if it was right, unless it is and was damaged in some way with the lettering or something, but why not just remove the wool one before sewing on the new one yadda yadda yadda

Im thinking the black wool is just a backing for the name tape to give it support.Like when a wool patch is sewn to a sizing material.
