easterneagle87 Posted August 9, 2019 Share #1 Posted August 9, 2019 I posted an overall shot of tis wing and other items I got in a lot over on "Latest Acquisitions". How common are Gus Fox Co., wings? You see a lot of AMICO and Meyer. They're keepers for my collection, how desirable are they to other collectors? Wake1941 Posted August 10, 2019 Share #3 Posted August 10, 2019 I wouldnt say rare, but Fox isnt one of the common makers
easterneagle87 Posted August 10, 2019 Author Share #4 Posted August 10, 2019 I hear ya. I really don't like the word "rare". It's over used and most of the time not true. Even though they aren't marked "sterling" was Fox's standard practice to make sterling wings.
pfrost Posted August 10, 2019 Share #5 Posted August 10, 2019 There are a couple of other rating that they made that are much rarer (IMHO). If I recall correctly, they also made glider and maybe service pilot wings. I would say the FOX pilot wings aren't very scarce but not exactly common. 5thwingmarty Posted August 10, 2019 Share #6 Posted August 10, 2019 I don't think I have ever seen anything but basic pilot wings with a Fox hallmark. I have a couple of pilot wings in the Fox pattern that have raised sterling marks but no Fox hallmark.
rathbonemuseum.com Posted August 12, 2019 Share #7 Posted August 12, 2019 Has anyone done any research on the Fox company? I found this from Gustave Fox' grandson... "Hi! I am Gustave Fox's great-grandson, still living on Cincinnati where the company (later called Fox Nameplate Co. and then just Fox Company) existed until the 1970s, run by my father. Would love to e-mail or talk with you further about all this. Thanks, John Fox" Tod

MikeK Posted April 24, 2021 Share #10 Posted April 24, 2021 Hi Marty, I missed that post. Definitely the clearest logo showing the superimposed F on O on X ! For what it's worth (and I can't provide pics at the moment), I've also seen the FOX logo on insignia like Army hat eagles and a tankers collar badge. Regards Mike
5thwingmarty Posted April 24, 2021 Share #11 Posted April 24, 2021 Fox pattern wings can also be found marked sterling but without the Fox logo in both pinback and clutch back. I have seen a few other military insignia besides wings with the Fox logo, but have never seen any other varieties of wings with the logo. Sorry my pics make these look like they are not silver. I need to find a cool white bulb for my lamp.
dmar836 Posted April 24, 2021 Share #12 Posted April 24, 2021 Nice. Throw them in the scanner. That worked pretty well. I still need to learn the "patterns". Looks like Fox's have the "whispies" in the marginal coverts on top. Sorry for the accurate bird terms. My earlier question got buried. Did Fox continue to make wings post-war? 5thwingmarty Posted April 24, 2021 Share #13 Posted April 24, 2021 I am not aware of anything that indicates when they stopped making wings and I don't believe they had a letter-number code assigned to them so it would appear they had stopped by the 1950's. donaldnol Posted November 9, 2021 Share #14 Posted November 9, 2021 i have two of the fox pilot wings & still to this day i dont know if they were made from silver, they look to be silver, smell like silver, they make a ringing sound like silver when flipped. Ivydiv Posted November 9, 2021 Share #15 Posted November 9, 2021 Ask your local coin shop if they have one of the machines that identify the composition of metal. My local guy has one and it will tell if it is Sterling, or some other metal or combination. I use him all the time. The old fashioned way with acid would work also, but the new machines don't leave any traces of being tested. Dave

5thwingmarty Posted April 26, 2022 Share #18 Posted April 26, 2022 Jeff, Congratulations on completing the trifecta, and your vastly superior photography skills. Be careful of getting inspired to complete wing sets as that can be a very enticing rabbit hole to go down. Unless there are other variations of Fox wings that I am not aware of, this is the only complete set of wings from a single manufacturer that I have.
