M1881 helmet research material recommendation?

Hello All,

After posting a question about a M1881 helmet I saw on line. I found that I have a lack of knowledge about the subject.

I had posted a pic of my GG uncle holding a Cavalry version in another thread here and someday I would like to add one to my collection.

What books or articles on line should I read to educate myself?
