Ethocel canteen question

Picked up an ethocel canteen that is marked AICO 1943. Question is the cap does not fit the canteen being too big. The cap looks original, pinned in to the canteen. I tried several other caps from other canteens and they were too large as well. They do not even begin to thread onto the canteen and just fall right off. Is this a one off deal or has the cap been swapped out? Of course the pictures I forwarded to myself here at work are missing the one I took of the threads. Thanks again for your thoughts and comments.

Probably just a manufacturing error. I couldnt imagine being in combat and having the cap come off and all your water gone. Probably never saw use

Would these types have a habit of shrinking/contracting over these long long years, IE the mouth/neck of these type canteens??

Also a good point, Im sure if stored improperly a mix of extreme heat and cold could surely cause it to shrink

I have never seen an ethocel canteen with that type of cap. I have a '42.'43, and ;44 dated ethocel canteen and they all have the early flat top cap. Your cap may have been changed out a some point due to the breakage of the orginal flat top and to whoever replaced the cap - a cap is a cap. Does the small bar retaining the chain to the canteen look as though it may have been buggered with?

It doesn't look messed with. I will check closer when I am back home but I could see nothing obvious.
