5thrangerson Posted August 4, 2019 Share #1 Posted August 4, 2019 Found this ruck recently, and was wondering where this fits the mountain ruck family. I can find no maker stamp but it is US marked with some other lettering on it. Buckles and snaps appear to be steel as is the zipper. It's not in the greatest of shape but it was cheap and just different enough that i Picked it up. It is just different enough from my other mountain rucks to make me wonder what exactly it is and when it was made. Any help would be appreciated and thanks in advance. I'm having trouble with picture resizing today so I will add more photos farther down.

crotalus358 Posted August 4, 2019 Share #5 Posted August 4, 2019 I think what you have there is the first model - kind of tough to find. Congrats!
'Flage Guy Posted August 10, 2019 Share #6 Posted August 10, 2019 That has some pretty noticeable differences from all the other 1st model Rucksacks I've ever seen. Did you look on the underside of the flap for more stampings?
'Flage Guy Posted August 19, 2019 Share #7 Posted August 19, 2019 Here are a couple of photos sent to me by an Ebay seller whom I'd bought another Rucksack item from. He described it as a very early 1941 prototype, and it's identical to yours, right down to the stampings on the flap.

5thrangerson Posted August 19, 2019 Author Share #9 Posted August 19, 2019 I looked all over for markings and their is none visible. Thanks for your pics, wish this one was in a little better condition.
'Flage Guy Posted August 19, 2019 Share #10 Posted August 19, 2019 Heh- He sent me a good load of pics, and his looks a good deal more used than yours does! I'll bet these are really super-hard to find in nice shape; I always assumed the common '41 models that we're all familiar with were the first made until he sent me a bunch of shots of this one, along with another early prototype. Airborne-Hunter Posted August 19, 2019 Share #11 Posted August 19, 2019 Anyone else notice the zipper pull at the six o'clock position in the first picture looks identical to the zipper pull on the first pattern compass pouch? I pretty sure I've seen one of these before but didn't think it was military..I wonder how many of these are actually out there?ABN
'Flage Guy Posted August 19, 2019 Share #12 Posted August 19, 2019 Anyone else notice the zipper pull at the six o'clock position in the first picture looks identical to the zipper pull on the first pattern compass pouch? I pretty sure I've seen one of these before but didn't think it was military..I wonder how many of these are actually out there?ABN The only 1941/1st model Rucksack I've ever seen that didn't have that little chain doo-dad on the zipper is one that I bought on which the zipper was gone, and I replaced it with another (below). All the others- and I've seen a zillion of 'em- had that "fancy" zip pull.
Allan H. Posted August 23, 2019 Share #13 Posted August 23, 2019 those ball chain pulls were added so that zippers could be opened and closed while wearing mittens. This is a VERY cool mountain rucksack. Allan
