usmedalman Posted August 4, 2019 Share #1 Posted August 4, 2019 I am trying to pin down when the spelling for Coxwain changed to Coxswain. I have a pre-WWI document with COXWAIN spelling and a 1940 document with it spelled COXSWAIN. Does anyone know when the change in spelling happened? Thanks
Salvage Sailor Posted August 4, 2019 Share #2 Posted August 4, 2019 It never did, coxwain is misspelled, it's always been Coxswain (pronounced Cox'un in the fleet)
usmedalman Posted August 4, 2019 Author Share #3 Posted August 4, 2019 In looking further at other documents, I see that you are correct. I had heard the term before but never saw it spelled out. This came up because in the letter from the Secretary of the Bureau of Navigation's to the US Mint for engraving the Specially Meritorious Medals, the spelling in all cases is COXWAIN and that is how it is spelled on the medals.
