Catfishcraig Posted July 18, 2019 Share #1 Posted July 18, 2019 I recently picked up this rusty lieutenant helmet set. Laundry Mark is on both the chinstrap and liner (T-7345). Liner is a Westinghouse with early flat buckle chinstrap. Looks period repainted and repaired bails. Can anyone help me identify the soldier by the laundry Mark? Thanks Craig

aznation Posted July 18, 2019 Share #7 Posted July 18, 2019 There's 29 men that share that laundry number. Might be kind of hard to narrow that down. http://wwii-enlistment.com/search/?q=T7345&select=laundryNumber&quick-search=
Catfishcraig Posted July 18, 2019 Author Share #8 Posted July 18, 2019 There's 29 men that share that laundry number. Might be kind of hard to narrow that down. http://wwii-enlistment.com/search/?q=T7345&select=laundryNumber&quick-search=1 Thank you for this information. It came out of Waterboro. ME. I noticed that all of these men were listed as the rank of Private. Would there been different enlistment records for officers? Thanks again for the research Craig
aznation Posted July 18, 2019 Share #9 Posted July 18, 2019 It’s possible that enlisted men whose laundry marks appear in that database may have later been commissioned as an officer. Also, remember that the Army recycled clothing and equipment. We have probably all seen trousers and jackets with multiple different laundry marks stamped on them. The mark on your helmet may have been from someone else before it was picked up and used by the Lieutenant. I’m thinking that in the absence of further identifying information it will be pretty hard to determine who that helmet actually belonged to. Catfishcraig Posted July 18, 2019 Author Share #11 Posted July 18, 2019 I carefully untangled the liner chinstrap last night. It was just supple enough to put back into place.
Nickman983 Posted July 18, 2019 Share #12 Posted July 18, 2019 I really love that the liner and helmet's chinstrap are both marked with his laundry number. Nice find!
Pegasus6 Posted July 18, 2019 Share #13 Posted July 18, 2019 Craig, In a week or so I would be willing to give it a shot if you are willing. Its one of my services/joys in life. If you are interested in discussing how we could narrow/run it down I have some ideas; best contact is via fb or email [email protected] facebook.com/renewhistory VRPeg6
Costa Posted July 18, 2019 Share #14 Posted July 18, 2019 I was going to say the same thing. my 34th red bull captains's lid was just that way. he went in enlisted an went up in rank to captain. that could be his enlisted number on the liner and strap then when promoted the LT bar was added. It’s possible that enlisted men whose laundry marks appear in that database may have later been commissioned as an officer. Also, remember that the Army recycled clothing and equipment. rob590ert Posted July 20, 2019 Share #16 Posted July 20, 2019 It could be a laundry number based off of his officer serial number too, dont rule that out. I have personally had two officer helmets that were marked that way.
