Stephenson was also a 'one hashmark chief', and unfortunately this uniform did not come with his ribbons. A Motor Machinist's Mate rating was established as a separate speciality from the ratings wearing the mark of Machinist's Mate in 1942. It was disestablished and combined into Engineman in 1948.

His uniform was made by a dual-distribution company: Hastings California & Haspel New Orleans.

The interior of this Summer Weight is also not lined, nor does it have pockets. You can see the difference of the cut of the Haspel & the previous Portlite uniform by comparing these photos.

Randall's uniform has the uncommon & unofficial 'China Campaign' ribbon plus the American, Asia-Pacific, Philippine & Victory ribbons. No occupation ribbon for this Ensign - he went home.

Rear & Interior - Besides the difference in weight, a Winter Weight uniform has a lining & lined exterior pocket flaps.

Randall's uniform is custom tailored - maunfactured by Browning on Fith Avenue, New York City. Though he's only an Ensign, he must have had a few bucks on hand.

Winter Weight uniforms also have interior pockets.

His cap is the standard issue, Naval Uniform Service. These caps were made to USN spec, but in comparing many of them I've found that L. Lewis & Son, New York, is a superior manufacturer. Their quality is excellent.

These are his shirt collar insignia (unfortunately the light grey shirt is not here), and his ruptured duck pin with the original wrapper. I found these in the pocket with his cap & ribbons when I acquired the uniform.

The Ensigns bars are hallmarked AMICO 1/20 10K G on S

Moving up the ladder, this is a Lieutenant Junior Grade custom tailored Winter Weight uniform that belonged to E.B. Sydnor.

I've not fully researched this officer, but he was most likely in a staff position. You may be seeing this as a more blue or even purple uniform, and the color is really unique. It is an interesting shade of grey and has lavendar stitching. This LT(JG) also had some bucks.

The shoulder boards are high quality, but standard USN Grey color. It must have had matching tailored boards when he was an Ensign, and he did not get a custom set when he was promoted to LT(JG).

This was an expensive uniform. Fully lined, excellent materials and design, with snaps on the corners of the pocket flaps.

I can see the ribbon shadows for two full bars (at least six ribbons) but I wonder if he ever made it out of the US.

This is an unnamed United States Coast Guard Lieutenant Junior Grade uniform, also a winter weight.

He must have been an Atlantic guardsman, as the uniform is made by Shulman & Co., Norfolk, VA. He also has no overseas ribbons, nor an American Campaign.

It has the older removable ring buttons. I've not come across these on grey USN uniforms, just this USCG uniform.

The uniform is tagged, but the Lieutenants name is very difficult to discern. He clearly had some lenghty sea service in the Pacific theater.
