Hello,

one question regarding the USMC P 41 shirts, when they have a name stenciled above the breast pocket and on the back, is this something you see in WW2 or in Korea ?

cheers

Alex

I would say the name above the pocket is more Korean era than WWII, with the name on the back being a late WWII thing

That's very interesting; gets me to wondering when this stencil below was applied. I always just assumed it was during the War because of the vintage of the Coat, but maybe not?

I have 2 P-41 jackets that belonged to Ernest Carr 1 Sig Batt, 1 Mar Div. He served at Cape Gloucester and Okinawa. He missed Saipan due to malaria (was super lucky as the rest of his tent mates were all killed or wounded).

One of the shirts was worn by him on Okinawa, and later used to paint his house!

He only served in WW2. One of the shirts has his name written above the pocket. I can’t remember which shirt. Will take some pics.

on Baystate militaria there was a P 41 shirt with the stenciled name above the pocket and on the back.

If its the one UU-1591 on their site, then I believe (without researching the name) the name stencil style is WW2 from the examples I have or have seen. The jacket itself is a nice wartime example.

I have a set of P42 camo utilities that belonged to a Tarawa vet and he stenciled his name above the breast pocket. It may have been done more during the Korean war but it was also done during WWII, too.

i have just encountered a few pictures of USMC personel in Guadalcanal with chevron stenciled on the sleeve, from what i have been reading that a stenciled chevron should be Korea period.

or are these painted by hand ?, difficult for me to make the difference
