From what I see here, you have a WWII vintage PH ribbon, but it is not one that came out of one of the medal cases. The ribbon has been added to a pin back bar for wear on the uniform.

How do you identify the one that came in the medal case with the actual medal?

There is a seller on ebay with auctions for similar 1/2" ribbon bars - the problem is that they (like the one above) are mounted on the pin back commonly seen on the more modern crimp-brooch medals, rather than the style you would expect to see on WWII ribbons. The ribbon may be good, but the pin is very much post-WWII.

Would a Zinc Back ribbon bar be proper for WW2 cased set?

Army sets will have either a brass back plate and pin or a zinc back plate and a steel pin. I wish that I could give you good tips for identifying the brs that came with cased medals, but the reality is that you'll just have to examine known originals and then go from there.
