1858 dated 1000-round Wooden Cartridge Box

Recommended Posts

I hope I am posting in the right place.

I have a wooden ammo box (crate?) that I will probably be selling. I need to get honest appraisals from people that know what they are talking about.

The box is dark painted wood. It appears black. Inside the lid is stenciled "Fabricated Benecia Arsenal" in an arc, and horizontally below that is "July 1858."

The sides of the box, above the handles are stenciled "1000 Rifle Musket."

Below the handles (very hard to read) is stenciled "Cartridges, X Bullets, Greased."

It has hinges installed on one long side, but they have let go from the lid long ago.

I would love to post photos, but I have once again forgotten how to do it, and become frustrated in the attempt.

Can someone please point me towards an honest appraiser?

Thanks!

The Benicia Arsenal was regarded as a 1st Class Arsenal for construction of ammunition, which paired alongside St. Louis, Watervliet, Allegheny, and Washington.

The ammunition crate would have been for either .54 rifle musket, .58 rifle musket, or .69 rifled musket, all of which were elongated ball- basically the minie ball.
