I got a call yesterday from the Pentagon, a General needed to conduct vehicle rollover egress training. Evidently, it took a few (dozen) calls to locate a rollover trainer, as I have the only one in the National Capital Region, and we're so far west we're barely Quantico...like 25 miles from the flagpole, and I can see our civilian neighbor the horse fanatic out my office window. We're talking 12 miles from anything else on Quantico. You know, the part of base so far, that Marines can go an entire tour (or career) without knowing we exist, much less visit. So far away we're technically in the next town, and have been designated a sub-camp, that nobody knows exists unless they went through OCS or TBS in the 50s-70s, or happen to be a Marine Reservist in the NCR. You get the idea.

That's right, some of our old salts here may have guessed I refer to Camp Upshur, home of The Grinder....

Anyhow, when I got here 18 months ago, I decided to set up a PVC mannequin with some old P-41s on it, some gear, and dubbed him John. I managed to get the General in for training today, because that's how I like to operate-promptly. (And not just for Generals, thank you very much.) Little did John or I know that the General is the head of Public Relations, and that John was about to be Twitter famous. Meet John...

Over time, due to our isolation, John has gone somewhat native. We found a styrofoam chicken on one of our fence posts one day...and John got a pet (yes, that IS a National Defense Ribbon on it's head). John also fashioned himself a homemade spear from a crossbow bolt and old antennae he found during this year's spring beautification. In his boot (not depicted), is his trusty fighting knife.

Business is slow in the winter...my busy season has started, don't worry I'll be swamped.

This is awesome! I miss the sense of humor in the smaller, less-visible units like when I was with the 24th MEU. The chicken with the fire watch ribbon is the best!

Brilliant! Brig, it sounds like you are so far away from the flagpole that it should constitute a remote duty assignment!

It's about 200 meters away from being an independent duty
