Mustang.CDR Posted May 22, 2019 Share #1 Posted May 22, 2019 Does anyone know what this may be? Merchant?
David Minton Posted May 22, 2019 Share #2 Posted May 22, 2019 Looks more like the USN Seaman Signal rates used from 1918-22, but I have never seen one with a Gunner's Mate mark. The USMS patches that look like that have "USMS" on them. Then again, I don't know much about USMS insignia.http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/18923-1918-1922-seaman-signalman-rates/
sigsaye Posted May 22, 2019 Share #3 Posted May 22, 2019 Never seen anything like it, but merchants would not have guns.
MastersMate Posted May 23, 2019 Share #4 Posted May 23, 2019 Could not find anything similar in the 1915 to present CG uniform info that I have.. Canadian Navy or Royal Navy perhaps ??
sigsaye Posted May 23, 2019 Share #5 Posted May 23, 2019 It would help to see the uniform and any other insignia. Possibly not US.
David Minton Posted May 23, 2019 Share #6 Posted May 23, 2019 Never seen anything like it, but merchants would not have guns. I'm pretty sure I have seen USMS Gunner's Mate rates, but don't have one myself. I thought there was a thread on the site with a complete collection of USMS rates, but can't find it. From the American Merchant Marine at War website - Gunner's Mate enlisted specialty mark shown http://www.usmm.org/usmsinsignia.html Larry
sigsaye Posted May 24, 2019 Share #8 Posted May 24, 2019 From the American Merchant Marine at War website - Gunner's Mate enlisted specialty mark shown http://www.usmm.org/usmsinsignia.html Larry . And, the more I think about it, they did carry lots of ammunition. Someone would have to insure it was safe and stowed properly on the merchant ships. I forgot, that even in the Navy, a Gunnersmates main job is maintaining the ammunition and magazines. Still an odd looking device though. Didnt the USMS we are rating badges, similar in style to USN ( but in red)? I dont know, it was never really something I payed close attention too. In the past 20-25 years, Ive focused only on family things, CS,EM,SM and CT (have 4 CTs in the family! So Spooky)!
