Bob Hudson Posted May 12, 2019 Share #1 Posted May 12, 2019 Somone local had this for sale: fur hat with silver EGA and a tag claiming "Shang Hi" roots. The photos are lousy but I saw it in person and it just didn't seem right to me. The EGA is pinback and looks worn.
Dirk Posted May 12, 2019 Share #2 Posted May 12, 2019 The hat might be Chinese, but not China Marine....would love to see photos of the inside to see how it compares to known orginals. BTW the 4th did not wear these in Shanghai...unless one brought it down from North China to wear after duty, minus the EGA, during Shanghai's few cold months. Bob Hudson Posted May 12, 2019 Author Share #3 Posted May 12, 2019 It did not look right in person: the EGA style doesn't quite look like anything I'd seen beforr, but I couldn't get access to the back. The guy said is was only marked STERLING.
Wake1941 Posted May 12, 2019 Share #4 Posted May 12, 2019 Looks odd to me Im almost leaning towards the cap as being civilian
Brig Posted May 12, 2019 Share #5 Posted May 12, 2019 Was the EGA pinback? There was an ugly lead sweetheart pin designed off the M37 cover emblem
Bob Hudson Posted May 13, 2019 Author Share #6 Posted May 13, 2019 Looks odd to me Im almost leaning towards the cap as being civilian It is very similar to the fur caps the Marines wore in iceland, but I've bought and sold a few of those and this is not the same: both have flaps that tie on top of the cap (the China Marine fur cap does not) but the fabric and colors and details were not the same. The dealer lives near me but I saw this at his show table and it just didn't seem right. I suspect he just bought it based on what the paper tag says. Bob Hudson Posted May 13, 2019 Author Share #7 Posted May 13, 2019 Was the EGA pinback? There was an ugly lead sweetheart pin designed off the M37 cover emblem He said it was stamped sterling but I didn't remove it from the hat. But your suggestion of lead might explain why the "silver" hadn't tarnished. It also explains the worn-looking surface of the EGA.
Bob Hudson Posted May 13, 2019 Author Share #8 Posted May 13, 2019 It's no surprise I guess to see a civilian hat posing as a China Marine piece considering that the Marines Iceland cap is also often sold online as a China Marine piece. We have a thread on the Marine fur caps at http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/29404-usmc-iceland-winter-wool-fur-cap/
themick Posted May 13, 2019 Share #9 Posted May 13, 2019 What ever the hat is, (and I tend to agree with the above comment it being civilian) the EGA is a very poor casting, regardless of the metal it's made of.

Bob Hudson Posted May 13, 2019 Author Share #11 Posted May 13, 2019 It was at the west coast show Yes - I know the seller a little bit and as I said above, I think he went by what the tag said.
