EEMueller Posted May 11, 2019 Share #1 Posted May 11, 2019 I just picked up an Atlanta Cutlery M-1917, that still has the original dark color, as well as the mostly hardened grease on the blade. It also has an old cardboard tube around the blade. Were these knives originally packaged like this, before being mated to a scabbard?
militariaone Posted May 11, 2019 Share #2 Posted May 11, 2019 Greetings, I believe you meant to say American Cutlery Company :-) As to your question, yes cardboard tubes were used to protect the blades while being shipped from the manufactures to the Army Depots where they were then united with their scabbards. See below for a Landers Frary & Clark M-1918 example with a similar cardboard tube. Best, V/r Lance

SKIPH Posted May 12, 2019 Share #5 Posted May 12, 2019 Nice to see that they can still be found in the shipping tubes, especially when you realize these are just over 100 years old. Thanks for showing. Lance I believe that's the first tube I've ever seen. Appreciate the pics. SKIP
