mikie Posted May 6, 2019 Share #1 Posted May 6, 2019 I saw one of these caps at the flea market on Saturday. Just like this one. No insignia with a 1997 contract date on tag. Condition was used and slightly dirty but in nice shape. The dealer was kind of strange and busy with another customer so passed it. As usual when this happens, it's been bothering me since then. What would be a fair price for a cap like this? The photo is from an online auction and has a price of $115, but is advertised as a rare WWII issue cap despite the 1997 contract tag inside. Thanks! Wake1941 Posted May 6, 2019 Share #2 Posted May 6, 2019 These are pretty common a buddy of mine used to have a surplus shop and had 1000s of these. They cost $3 about 10 years ago. There is still tons of these floating around they dont command much value
CombatEng44 Posted May 6, 2019 Share #3 Posted May 6, 2019 Yeah, maybe $10 if you could find a buyer. Stay away if it is value you are after.
mikie Posted May 6, 2019 Author Share #4 Posted May 6, 2019 Thanks. It's just one of those things I pass on and then think back about later. If I'm in the mood and if it's still there next month I'll see what he wants for it but now know not to go over 5 or 10 bucks max. I appreciate the sage advice! Dave Posted May 6, 2019 Share #5 Posted May 6, 2019 Yep...I'm with the other guys...it's maybe a $5 piece. They've since discontinued their wear in the Navy as of October 1, 2018, so there are probably tons of them floating around as they're not a wearable uniform item anymore. mikie Posted May 6, 2019 Author Share #6 Posted May 6, 2019 Ok thanks again. My humble collection is sadly short on items honoring woman veterans and I like headgear, so this seemed a good grab if the price was right. I'll see what happens if it is still there next month if I haven't gotten over this one yet. There's a militaria show just up the street from me on the 25th. Maybe I'll find something better there. David Minton Posted May 6, 2019 Share #7 Posted May 6, 2019 Modern items that look similar to WWII have some value to reenactors. While this has a similar shape to the WWII era Officer and CPO caps, the color and material are different enough to not pass. WWII era will be very dark blue rather than black.I concur that caps from this era have minimal value ($5-$10). You can pick one up cheap, but will likely never be worth much. If you can get one, the WWII WAVES enlisted cap has a distinctive look, and was only used for a short period of time; it was passed out by I believe 1948. mds308 Posted June 10, 2019 Share #8 Posted June 10, 2019 I believe the same hat is/was worn by the women in the US Coast Guard too.
mikie Posted June 10, 2019 Author Share #9 Posted June 10, 2019 Well the hat was gone at the flea market last week. Oh well. Thanks for all the sage advice. Now I know what to do if I see another. Regards, Mikie
