BILL THE PATCH

I don't have a picture of the DUI, but the motto is Ready to roll , this unit was attached to the 7th army during the Korean war give or take a year or two. Also stationed in Germany. And it's definitely Artillary. Any help greatly appreciated

It's probably the 290th Billy as the 188th is in what I think is a Indian language, I say Indian as the 188th is of the North Dakota NG (Sioux??), Wana Kogmeya, this translated Ready to Roll.

This is the 188th, note the motto.

Did the 290th have a DUI?, I'm waiting on picture of uniform. Then I'll post the DUIs, has 7th army patch with Germany tab. On Ike with Korean war era stripes. That's why I was thinking occupation unit in Germany.

1955 you say? the stripes are green emb on blue twill thought they would have been fazed out by then.

After 1955 (DI adopted 3 October 1955) as mentioned, hope the stripes aren't those little 1948 reg ones cause they were not worn in 1956 anymore, yes into 1952 as a stretch, but by then they were wholly replaced by the old large WWII types and the newly designed ones of OD on Blue Twill.

Hey but that 17th Field Artillery Brigade would be incorrect, 17th Field Artillery Brigade is inactivated after WWII. At the time your IKE was worn with the new unit DI's for the 290th AFA Bn, it was as you see from the USAEUR site, under 142nd Field Artillery Group, V Corps, not sure if they might of worn the 5th Corps patch after awhile, probably not as you claim it has a 7th Army patch on it.

A little back ground on the 290th AFA is in order, in WWII it was 290th Field Artilley Observation Battalion, activate 20 October 1943 at Leonard Wood, three campaign credits in the ETO, Rhineland, Ardennes Alsace, Central Europe .Inactivated 26 October 1945 at Kilmer, reactivated in the Reserves out in Ohio 1 November 1948 as the 349th Field Artillery Observation Battalion, withdrawn from the rolls of the reserves and allotted to the Regular Arm 28 October 1954, reactivated in Germany where it's reorganized and redesignated as the 290th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, it's Colors are sent to Sill where unit is inactivated forever during the CARS reorganization.

No those were the new ones, started to be seen in 1952, they were used side by side with the various WWII types till 1958.

Ach Who Knows Billy, we all seen a ton of these things with some discrepancies, some are easy to tell or explain, like the WWII going home Ikes and M26 Coats, some not to easy to tell and explain.

The easiest explanation we can come up with with this Ike is that all the insignia save for the rack is original, it's the rack that been added by whoever, a clear way to tell is to look at each ribbons rear and the mounts themselves, that's where you will tell, cause normally any old ribbons of the appropriate type and the mounts just might be non period, codes from the 60s up to the current.
