mds308 Posted May 1, 2019 Share #1 Posted May 1, 2019 This is a 1959 game ball from the Army Navy Game. Scores on the ball and there are a bunch of autographs, one being Joe Bellino. He won the Heisman Trophy in 1960 (I have this ball too). Does anybody know the history of this tradition? Any idea of how many were made after a victory? Yes, there is a paint splash on the # 3. Thanks for the help.

Dave Posted May 1, 2019 Share #5 Posted May 1, 2019 That's very cool. I never saw any balls like this aside from ones on display when I was stationed at the Academy. I did have a commemorative ball for one of the Army-Navy games (2005, IIRC) signed by the team, along with a hat, which my midshipmen also had Roger Staubach sign for me. Pretty cool. mds308 Posted May 1, 2019 Author Share #6 Posted May 1, 2019 Another cool piece. Here is the Navy vs. Army 1960 game ball. I was told the 150LB. has to do with players body weight.
thorin6 Posted May 3, 2019 Share #7 Posted May 3, 2019 For the 150-Pound teams, if I remember correctly, the players had to weigh 154 pounds on the Wednesday before the game, which was played on Friday afternoon. There were/are 7 teams in the league. My son was one of the 150-pound managers in the late 1990s.

BeckettM101 Posted May 16, 2019 Share #9 Posted May 16, 2019 I wonder if the player got to keep the ball if he got a touchdown. My grandpa was talking about when he was in High School, you got to keep the ball if you got a touchdown. That might explain the weight on the ball.
