Picked this up in an assortment of stuff...no idea what it is, when I bought the lot I thought there was a clip on the back, but turns out it's a rather wide loop for some sort of belt or strap. Anyone have any idea what this is?

John Conway

Reminds me of a belt slide for a sword hanger of some type with a link for the strap or chain attaching through the hole in the bottom. The Federal style eagle would suggest regular Army but it's nothing I can recall seeing in a use application before.

Interesting thought...the loop is large enough for a wide leather belt, such as a USMC dress belt width

I think it may be a horse harness decoration for a military caisson team. Perhaps funerary?

Looks sort of like it would go on a saddle, the back piece looks like some sort of strap would go through

Its for a sword belt....belt slides/keepers for sword hangers.

Im guessing a veterans orgamization...GAR,Sons or Span AM etc.Possibly private purchase military.

Curious if they would show up in an old Ames or Lilly catalog etc.

This one is a section of a fraternal belt from the turm of the Century

doyler is quite right about this being a belt slide for a sword hanger. Also correct that it is not military regulation but was used by "Society" or "Fraternal" organizations as part of their regalia.

Here is an example of the same slide on a Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) sword belt.

Most likely GAR. The Grand Army of the Republic swords and belt buckles came in both finishes.

Someone on eBay said it was Knights of Saint Johns, but it came with other period militaristic items, so not sure of that...of course it could have been used by multiple groups
