Cavalry Beret and Patch Assistance

Good evening all. Trust everyone is well. Picked up a grouping to a gentleman who served in Vietnam with A/1/9 CAV 1 Cav in 65-66, C/7/1 Cav in 67-68, HHT/7/1 Cav in 68. He was an aviation troop commander in Vietnam. He was a pilot and earned a CIB.

Can anyone provide more information on the beret and patch? Would he have worn the beret while serving in Vietnam. Hard to tell from the picture put there are vertical holes to the wearer's right next to the tank badge that indicate rank was worn. More than likely a Lieutenant's bar I believe. (There were a 2d Lieutenant's bar and a Lieutenant's bar that appears to have been painted over black in the grouping.) There are some other piece's I'll try to add to the thread.

I appreciate any and all information.

I believe that patch is 3rd Brigade 3rd Infantry Division..

I can't comment on the time period though, possibly 1970's??

I appreciate the assistance. Based on your info and further research he was stationed at Ascaffenberg Germany where 3d Brigade called home. It lines up.

Still hoping for any insight as to the beret. Thanks.

The badge on the beret was an unofficial armor insignia made for the black berets back in the 70's I believe. It never caught on as later the Rangers were given the beret instead of the armor forces that has unofficially been wearing them for some time. It would have had rank on it as well for officers normally, but each unit kinda did their own thing as it was unofficial. Reproductions of the badge come up every now and then on eBay, but few know what they are. I used to have a page referenced on the badge but swapped computers and can't seem to find it. If I do I'll post a link.

I still have a badge I bought at the Armor Center and School book store when I went through my Primary Leadership Development Course (PLDC) at Ft Knox around 1978.
