dunmore1774 Posted April 15, 2019 Share #1 Posted April 15, 2019 Just picked this up at the local goodwill. Looks like an early, pre-WW1 canteen and cover. There are no markings on the cover that I can see. It has the pea green color of the pre-war equipment. Four line stitches in front, small x and rectangle for the back strap. The canteen doesnt have the typical manufacturers markings like WW1 canteens, the only markings are engraved on the bottom 187-15. And some other crude markings that look like JACKSON / MICHIGAN Anyone able to ID if this is in fact USGI and what specific type of cover? Thanks in advance! robinb Posted April 15, 2019 Share #3 Posted April 15, 2019 The cover looks Made in Japan to me.
denfly Posted April 16, 2019 Share #4 Posted April 16, 2019 The cover appears to be either Dutch or French, not US. The canteen with that style of cap and neck ring is before 1918 but after 1915.
Pep Posted April 16, 2019 Share #5 Posted April 16, 2019 Canteen looks to be a 1917 US model.(no date) The neck has no ring but just a pin holding the chain. The boss for the pin is part of the neck.
Cap Camouflage Pattern I Posted April 16, 2019 Share #6 Posted April 16, 2019 Cover looks very similar to a made in Japan one I have.
dunmore1774 Posted April 16, 2019 Author Share #7 Posted April 16, 2019 The material of the cover is much heavier than the Japanese made covers I've handled.
robinb Posted April 17, 2019 Share #8 Posted April 17, 2019 If it was pre WW1 it would have eagle snaps.
dunmore1774 Posted April 17, 2019 Author Share #9 Posted April 17, 2019 Is that really a rule set in stone? Here's a 1916 marked RIA with lift snaps. http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/256000-unissued-transitional-m1910-canteen-cover-ria-1916/
robinb Posted April 17, 2019 Share #10 Posted April 17, 2019 Your cover is not USGI. Accept it.
