tthen Posted April 13, 2019 Share #1 Posted April 13, 2019 I've been looking for a sling that would have been issued to US troops armed with the M1916 Nagant and came across this picture. Any guesses about the sling? Also what about that cartridge box and belt? Thanks

world war I nerd Posted April 13, 2019 Share #3 Posted April 13, 2019 Sailors armed with Moisin-Nagant rifles from the U.S.S. Olympia in Vladivostok. Note that both makeshift cord and leather rifle slings are used.
world war I nerd Posted April 13, 2019 Share #4 Posted April 13, 2019 In this close up of one of the leather rifle slings from the above photos, it appears to be tied onto the swivel with cord. If this is the case, it too appears to be a makeshift sling.

SGT CHIP SAUNDERS Posted April 18, 2019 Share #6 Posted April 18, 2019 NO EXPERT . The cartridge box is very likely a McKeever for the single Krag ammo in loops . Russet brown in color, not really intended for field usage Appears our doughboy has it looped through his overcoat belt, expediently done If my eyes are right in the photo provided, there is also a model 1903 eagle embossed cartridge belt, also adaptable to the M1891 stripper clips
Big Al Posted April 22, 2019 Share #7 Posted April 22, 2019 He is wearing the McKeever on an M1904 garrison belt, which isn't a component of the overcoat. The sling looks like the standard Russian pattern sling to my eye. As an aside, I know we like to think every weapon and item of gear the US used at one point or another had its own nomenclature. But, the US never assigned the name "M1916" to the Mosin-Nagant. They are always referred to in official correspondence as "Russian rifles".
