A Tale of Two Logbooks

The 506th Fighter Group was part of the 7th Fighter Command's Very Long Range units. It was created, from it's inception in October of 1944, as the only VLR group from the start (The 21st and 15th FG both fought earlier in the war and turned into VLR units). This meant that from the beginning, the 506th's squadrons were to have twice as many pilots as airplanes. The thought was if you flew an 8+ hour mission one day, you would not be ok to fly the next....therefore the other pilot would take the next mission.

As part of the 462nd FS, Lts. Darryl Bash and Ed Linfante shared P-51 #616 - Shanghai Lil. While they always did not fly their assigned airplane, it is pretty neat to see both logbooks together! Ed's sister still has his logbook, while Darryl's son has his.

There are a few overlaps on some missions, but a lot that are separate.
