skypilot6670 Posted April 10, 2019 Share #1 Posted April 10, 2019 Shellenberger story for me starts at Gettysburg. He was in D Co. 61st Ohio Vol. Inf. 11th Corps. Deployed as skirmishes supporting Dilger and Wheelers batteries ,trying to hold Doles Brigade back.Shellenberger was wounded , probably during the retreat to Cemetary Hill. His I.D. Ring is stamped Co 82nd O.V.V.I. 20th A.C. This is the final type of soldier I.D. That I have in my collection. I.D.Disc , Corps Badge I.D. , Paper I.D. Tag ,Jewler made Badge and I.D. Ring. sundance Posted April 10, 2019 Share #4 Posted April 10, 2019 Very nice ring - looks hefty. I'm guessing that's gold on the front. What day did the action you're talking about take place?
skypilot6670 Posted April 10, 2019 Author Share #5 Posted April 10, 2019 Hi Sundance. I was talking about the first days fight. What is important to me is that Shellenberger was in support of Dilgers Battery L 1st Ohio Light Artillery . Dilger won the Medal of Honor for action at Chancellorsville. Bruce Cattons , Glory Road describes Dilgers action at both Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. It is my favorite Civil War history and covers Dilgers actions at both battles in depth.
