gap Posted April 10, 2019 Share #1 Posted April 10, 2019 Purchased this late war helmet liner from a local auction at an American Legion post. The lining is in excellent condition, so I decided to strip and paint it. I imagine some members will be offended that I "restored" the liner, but I don't see much harm since it was altered by the Legion in the first instance. Anyway, here is the before photo. gap Posted April 10, 2019 Author Share #3 Posted April 10, 2019 I stripped the white paint/decal with Easy Off oven cleaner and then painted it with multiple coats of Testor's flat Olive Drab spray paint. I think it came out pretty good. The color is pretty close to some original liners that I have seen. I plan to leave it out in the elements for a few months to weather the finish. ClaptonIsGod Posted April 11, 2019 Share #6 Posted April 11, 2019 I'd be careful about weathering it out in the elements. Remember, it'll weather the inside, too.

MattS Posted April 11, 2019 Share #8 Posted April 11, 2019 Looks good! Just need a leather strap, sweatband, and nape strap to complete it.
gap Posted April 11, 2019 Author Share #9 Posted April 11, 2019 I have the nape strap and sweat band which came with the helmet and they are both in as nice of condition as the rest of the webbing. Finding a period correct leather chin strap will prove difficult, as always.

danangdave Posted April 11, 2019 Share #12 Posted April 11, 2019 I'd be careful about weathering it out in the elements. Remember, it'll weather the inside, too. if you put it on a flat surface it wont weather inside.
