Naval Unit Citation was awarded quite a bit in WWII to various Marine and Navy units that distinguished themselves. It would make perfect sense for any Marine or Sailor to have this on his uniform. Marine units got these for various things...participation in certain battles / campaigns that were especially vital to success in the theater, etc.

check out the post on WWII US Marine Uniforms in the uniforms section -- you'll see plenty of NUC and PUC ribbons there. The NUC and PUC for USN /Marine troops is a "ribbon only" award -- meaning there is no medal associated with it. When worn with full sized medals, the unit citations are worn on the wearer's right side.

The Navy Unit Commendation was authorized on December 18, 1944.

Awarded by the Secretary of the Navy to any qualifying unit of the Navy or Marine Corps.

It is awarded to any unit that distinguishes itself by outstanding heroism in combat against a hostile foreign force or for extreemly meritorious service not involving combat but in support of military operations.
