This was at an estate sale and from the back it looks not bad and has the cool stenciling for XO SSN 684 - The USS Cavalla.

But flip it over and it's another story - lots of stray paint and a broken zipper. But hey, it looks great in one direction anyway.

One bummer is that the jacket itself is in such nice condition that it makes the paint even more frustrating.

USS Cavalla (SSN-684), was a Sturgeon-class submarine, in service from 1973 to 1998. This is coat is dated 1978 so it likely became part of the sub's gear as it was moving from Atlantic Fleet to Pacific Fleet.

That's seafoam green paint you have there. The official engine room color on submarines.

I was hoping it would be Prussian Blue as noted in a post elsewhere from a former Cavalla crewman:

Paint and broken zippers were pretty standard for these jackets.

Being marked for a sub's XO there was no way I could pass on this, paint and zippers notwithstanding. Now I need to find a sub collector who is also willing to overlook the flaws :) It does look pretty good hanging up with just the back visible.

The neat thing is that while some people want the coats in the best of condition, for sub collectors, being stenciled and showing acceptable signs of use just makes it cooler. That is not paint from grandpa's garage, that is paint from a working vessel.
