mvmhm Posted March 13, 2019 Share #1 Posted March 13, 2019 ALCON, Have any of you seen such a thing? This was dropped off this morning..it's a red metal disk, 10 inches in diameter and about 16th of an inch thick. The reverse is flat white. The man who brought it in also included this notarized letter from 2014 and said these disks were mounted along the roadway to mark the route of the Red Ball Express. We've all seen the famous picture o teh big road sign, and I've seen some small markers that said "Red Ball Express". I believe it's possible that it is, in fact, an RBE road marker, but I'd like some anecdotal or visual proof. Mark sends
Major Z Posted March 13, 2019 Share #2 Posted March 13, 2019 If you look at Red Ball Express: Supply Line from the D-Day Beaches by Pat Ware, you'll see in period photos and restored trucks that these were affixed to the front of the trucks. I think that's what you have here. Still very cool!
mvmhm Posted March 14, 2019 Author Share #3 Posted March 14, 2019 Thanks for the tip! I believe you're right! There's a WWII US Army film on the RBE called Driving to the Rhine and it shows the trucks on the move and specifically mentions "the red disk above the bumper tells them we're coming..." I took a picture of that portion..the disk isn't an exact match, but I think it's got to be pretty close. Now I need to find an RBE Ike to go with it! mvmhm Posted March 14, 2019 Author Share #4 Posted March 14, 2019 ...and one that's more in focus..unfortunately, someone colorised the disk. Mark sends
