I just thought these were pretty neat and the simple story behind them as well. These stationary sheets were made by the father of a pilot in the 462nd FS, William Ebersole. His father worked in the newspaper industry, and after the squadron insignia was completed by one the pilots in the squadron, he sent a sketch home to his father, who then got a print master made, and printed out sheets of paper with the insignia on them for Bill and his squadron mates.

For some reason this keeps rotating every time I attach it!

And this was pretty neat.......another pilot in the squadron mentions and uses the stationary in a letter home. Here is the transcribed letter home, sent to me by his granddaughter.

Letter # 38-B April 29 (On the 462nd letterhead)

Hello Darling – How do you like the Sqd. Insignia? It was drawn by one of the officers in the squadron, (Bob)Torgerson is his name. It’s simple, but rather impressive in its simplicity, I think.

General Arnold wrote us a nice letter approving it, and suggested that it be painted on both sides of the fuselage, forward of the cockpit, with the mustang facing to the front on both sides.

Perhaps I told you about the insignia while we were at Lakeland, but I don’t believe you saw it.

One of the boys in the ground echelon had this stationary printed, but so far there hasn’t been enough of it on hand for distribution – I got only two sheets…
