redone Posted March 5, 2019 Share #1 Posted March 5, 2019 Hello, Has anyone come across piece like this? Its the 25th Bombardment insignia facing the wrong way painted on a piece of stiff linnen .It looks old. Is it a patch? If so what what would be sewn on ? Any thoughts ? Thank you. R. Watkins Posted March 5, 2019 Share #2 Posted March 5, 2019 I'm not certain about the actual usage of this piece, but as a point of information: all AAC/AAF designs approved by the Hearldry Section were required to face forward when applied to an aircraft fuselage regardless of the original design. Your example would have been correct for starboard applications, but this item looks way to small for aircraft usage, so I'm clueless as to its actual purpose. Nice item regardless. redone Posted March 5, 2019 Author Share #3 Posted March 5, 2019 I thought is was to small for an aircraft also. Thank you Watkins for your input. Hopefully I'll get some more from other members.
R. Watkins Posted March 5, 2019 Share #4 Posted March 5, 2019 I just had a really off-the-wall thought. As you know, this design dates back to the WWI era despite not being officially adopted until 15 Feb 1924. The long and short of all this being that the 25th Aero Sqdn's operational history goes all the way back to the wood and canvass aircraft days. Do you think this might be something left over from a pre-metal fuselage era?
redone Posted March 5, 2019 Author Share #5 Posted March 5, 2019 WWI was my original thought. It definitely looks and feels old enough to be WWI era. It's the size that confuses me. It came in a box of paper at an auction. All the papers in the box ranged from the 1880s to 1940s.
R. Watkins Posted March 6, 2019 Share #6 Posted March 6, 2019 This one of those emblem mysteries worth trying to solve. I really hope you get an answer as to this items original purpose.
