American Graffiti Posted February 15, 2019 Share #1 Posted February 15, 2019 Thought all the helmet nerds might like to see this. Don McCullins graffiti'd and battle scarred M1 worn by him in Vietnam. Whether this is the one he wore in Hue I don't know, it's also very likely it could have been re-issued to him, so could bear some previous owners graffiti. It's on display at a Don McCullin retrospective exhibition here in London at the Tate gallery. Anyway, enjoy AG
1canpara Posted February 15, 2019 Share #2 Posted February 15, 2019 Very cool helmet! I saw a photo exhibition of his work at the IWM in London a few years ago and have read his book, it’s a great read!

American Graffiti Posted February 16, 2019 Author Share #4 Posted February 16, 2019 Glad you both liked. I'm sure I've read something somewhere, maybe in the Mark Bowden Hue book, about journalists arriving at Hue and being given Marines helmets from a pile? Ring any bells? Anyway, there are certainly layers of graffiti 'McCullin Times England and Magnum' obviously done by him, but others are more faint and obscure. AG No that does not ring any bells to me personally but makes sense. I'm sure he picked up an m1955 along the way too..
Cap Camouflage Pattern I Posted February 16, 2019 Share #7 Posted February 16, 2019 That is a beauty! I bet the pile of helmets was from wounded men, piles of gear taken from wounded men were often made after engagements.

American Graffiti Posted February 17, 2019 Author Share #18 Posted February 17, 2019 Sorry no! It's divided into the chapters of his career, early work, Cyprus, Biafra, Vietnam, Lebanon etc Also his London down and outs, English portraits etc and then later landscapes and still lives, which were a sort of cathartic healing for a lot of the conflicts and brutality he witnessed. His accompanying descriptions to the photos were very moving AG

Justin Posted February 18, 2019 Share #20 Posted February 18, 2019 Without a doubt the same cover as the leaf pattern matches perfectly. It's just been reversed on the shell.
