I realize this is quite late but I've been away from the Forum for quite some time.

My dear friend and mentor, John Dunn, passed peacefully at home on 6 September 2018. As a Lieutenant, John was my Platoon Commander and was the "Dunn" of Dunn's Raiders and personally led Recon Team Dutch Oven. As an enlisted Sergeant, her spent a tour on the Drill Field at Parris Island. His last tour was command of a recruiting center in Boston.

After retirement, he worked for the US Department of Labor as the Rhode Island director for Veterans' Employment and Training. He will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery in June 2019. As a Captain he served as a Co Van on a second tour.

John's individual decorations included (his Army decorations case wile serving as an advisor): The Silver Star, Bronze Star with "V and two OLC, Army Commendation with "V" and one OLC, Purple Heart with one gold star, Marine Corps Expeditionary medal, National Defense Medal with one bronze star device, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with two silver star devices and one bronze star device, and the Vietnamese Campaign medal.

Wishing you fair winds and following seas, Skipper. Marine Det, Heaven has gained one hell of a CO!

Hello Lori.  I was proud to have served in John's platoon.  He was a good man, a brave Recon Marine leader, and a great friend.  While everyone dies sometime, John always seemed "bigger than life."  I was proud to, along with fellow Dunn's Raider and Recon Team Dutchoven Marine, Nicky Burns, to have been at his funeral to see him off for his final PCS to the Marine Guard Detachment at Heaven's Gate.

Best regards; Bill
