Duffle bag with ID and Unit Identification code

Hello,

 

I have found this duffle bag in Germany.

 

It has bellong to a Merlin J. Wild 38495626 and it also have a Unit Identification code 84288 with 3 red strips.

 

Later this Bag was issue to a German PoW which came back home with it.

 

 

Can anyone tell me more about the US soldier and the Unit code.
