In 2003 my friend, Charles Huppert, gave me some photos he had taken on his trip to Stalag Luft 111.

He was invited to attend the excavation of tunnel "Dick", shown later on PBS Nova, The Great Escape.

My regret was that I did not go with him, I could not get away from work at that time.

I scanned four photos, three of them taken by Charles; Also a photo a Charles and myself, I cannot

remember the year it was taken.

One of the Memorial to those 50 men murdered by the Germans.

Next a photo of archaeologist Peter Boyle, holding the entrance to the tunnel "Dick", that was in

the washroom sump.

Next the photo of the archaeologists working at the bottom of the pit, tunnel "Dick".

And last is a group photo in front of the Memorial, I don't know who took this, of

Charles, Jann-Neen Jones, David "Davy" Jones, Bertram "Jimmy" James and Madge James.

Photo showing the digging down to the bottom of tunnel "Dick".

Charles said they found many objects, including pieces of KLIM cans

used together as air vents.

I have a copy of COL Sage's book. A great read! It was personally signed and delivered to me when I was a young 2LT at Mother Rucker. That's a story in itself.
