johnny12550 Posted January 25, 2019 Share #1 Posted January 25, 2019 HI, I bought this trench art shell lamp today and rewired it. The wood base was pretty stuck on so I could not take it apart to see the bottom of the shell markings, I did not want to break the wood base. Based on the pics provided can anyone identify the shell? Is it WW1, SAW War or maybe in between the wars? It definitely looks like at least WWI vintage in design. It is pretty large as you can see when it is compared to the Ike jackets in the background.. Thanks

Brian Keith Posted January 25, 2019 Share #5 Posted January 25, 2019 Really cool Dragon! I love "trench art". It would help the ID if you gave us the length of the brass case and also the diameter of the projectile. The way the lamp parts are done suggest to me it was a commercially done piece. I have in front of me a Quick Firing 3-pounder Hotchkiss shell dated 1913 that looks about like it. Mine has a brass case 14 13/16th inches tall and the projectile is 47mm. Cool piece! Bodes Posted January 25, 2019 Share #6 Posted January 25, 2019 Looks a lot like an Imperial Japanese round.....Bodes
johnny12550 Posted January 25, 2019 Author Share #7 Posted January 25, 2019 I don't know what is the problem, but the pics show sideways. If you click on them they will show correctly
johnny12550 Posted January 25, 2019 Author Share #8 Posted January 25, 2019 That's funny you say that because one of the stamps look Japanese. But, the lamp style is American trench art style and definitely older than WW2
johnny12550 Posted January 25, 2019 Author Share #9 Posted January 25, 2019 I'll get the dimensions, but I don't thin it's commercial. The bulb mounts and arms are not perfect as something that would be sold commercially.

johnny12550 Posted January 25, 2019 Author Share #11 Posted January 25, 2019 Thanks everyone for the input. From what I found online, it looks to be an early Hotchkiss 6 puond round. Looks like a 3 piece Winchester made round. All the ones I found were made in the 1880s, so this lamp probably dates to the Spanish American War or just before WW1. Looks like the navy stopped using the round around 1910
