Roystone Posted January 16, 2019 Share #1 Posted January 16, 2019 Friends, I am wondering if someone can help me trying to ascertain if USAAC men actually received clasps to their Victory medals? I'm asking because I am sure I read that as these various units were attached to French corps/division etc and ostensibly under French not US command that (on Pershing's insistence) that clasps were not awarded to their medals? Or have I badly mis-understood?! I ask because I have a Span Am/WW1 group to a Brooklyn man who had served with the 13th NYSNG in the Spanish American War and later served with Section 624 USAAC. He was in his forties and a Clerk at Columbia Uni, hence the connection with the Princeton/Yale Ambulance which was funded by Columbia I believe. I am sure his no-clasp Victory medal is missing it's clasps, as he served with his unit at the Front between December 1917 and August 1918 when he was invalided home to the US with shell-shock. A newspaper article about him at the time states he served in the entire "Picardy campaign". Can anyone help? Thanks Roy
BEAST Posted July 13, 2019 Share #2 Posted July 13, 2019 Hi Roy, Sorry for the late response, but I just ran across your message. Yes, members of the US Army Ambulance Service received their campaign bars. This link will take you to an ambulance group which includes the vets VM. http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/226895-the-purdue-ambulance-section-598/?fromsearch=
