Zouave uniform - civil war period?

Recommended Posts

I have in my possession this 19th century zouave uniform. It came from a collection of Indian Wars thru WWI uniforms. The owner had never been able to determine what regiment it's from or if it was civil war period. If anyone can shed some light on it, I would greatly appreciate it. I am also curious as to what it's value may be.

I would Say 1880's to 1890's. Buttons appear to be 1872 staff buttons. Based on the sewing, material, especially the machine sewn button hole it is most definitely post civil war. Civil war garments will show machine sewing on the main panels of fabric however the evenness of the stitch lines will be spread out and tend to wander a bit (not nearly as tight as late 19th Century garments). Linings will be hand stitched as well as hand stitched button holes. Button hole machines had just been invented however they had not made it into use for Civil War uniform production. The one button hole that you show is diffinanly machine stitched,.During the late 19th Century, many musical bands donned Zouave style uniforms I am guessing this is one such example.

The trousers are not typical Zouave style, but rather common trousers. No Tambou (SIC) on the jacket . I'd say it's probably a Band uniform. The jacket trim looks more like what a band would use, not a Zouave military formation. (JMHO)

My first instinct is 1875ish. Not a zouave uniform per se.

Could be militia, or a band uniform. If all buttons are eagle buttons similar to what is pictured, then I would lean towards a militia uniform. Hand stitching is visible in several of the photos....

No idea where it originated?

Thanks for the feedback everyone. The buttons on the jacket are all US military. The buttons on the trousers are all wood besides two that are metal. The linings are hand-stitched in both pieces.

Unfortunately there is no other info on its origin.
