PlaneCrazy Posted January 3, 2019 Share #1 Posted January 3, 2019 As I stated in my intro, my mail collection is old writing implements. I've developed a bit of a sub-collection of military-related items. The mystery wings started with an ink well used at the San Diego Air Station during the 1940's. As you can see it has the naval aviation wings on it. I then found a printer's block with the same wings. Cool! I learned a bit about the Naval Aviation wings Then I found another printer's block, but these wings are different. Instead of a shield it has a rayed sun. I've looked everywhere for one like it can can't find anything. Wondering if any of y'all have any idea what it might have been for. Could it be for a specific unit, or some other group? It was obviously used to print in a newspaper, magazine or other flyer. I'm stumped. Thanks, Andrew
Bob Hudson Posted January 3, 2019 Share #2 Posted January 3, 2019 For Chinese pilots trained in the US during WWII ???? http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/19914-us-training-chinese-pilots-in-ww2/ The woodblock looks like it's for Chinese naval aviators. Here's an image from the link and wings without the anchor:
Dave Posted January 3, 2019 Share #3 Posted January 3, 2019 My first guess was Argentina as they use the sun as a symbol...no luck there though.
rathbonemuseum.com Posted January 3, 2019 Share #4 Posted January 3, 2019 I collect a lot of worldwide wings from WWII period and this does not look like any military I am familiar with, especially with that style sun. As already pointed out, Argentina and China incorporated suns but of a different design.
