Tonomachi Posted December 30, 2018 Share #1 Posted December 30, 2018 I picked this up at the flea market this morning. It is missing the mouth piece which the seller said must have fallen off during transit but would give it to me once he finds it. I don't know anything about bugles but the engraving looks old. It says MADE BY ?????? ELKHART, IND. USN. I can't make out the fancy script engraving of I'm guessing the manufacture. I didn't know that the USN used bugles as I thought they used boatswain mate whistles on-board ships.

P-40Warhawk Posted December 30, 2018 Share #4 Posted December 30, 2018 The Navy used bugles (and had their own bugle calls too) all the way up through WWII. In fact there was a rate called Bugler. I have an old 78rpm record somewhere from WWI that has bugle calls of both the Army and the Navy on it. Really cool find.
Brian Keith Posted December 30, 2018 Share #5 Posted December 30, 2018 Nice find, When you wrote Elkhart, IN, I immediately thought Conn, long time maker of brass musical instruments. They made lots of other brass things during the war, lots of compasses for the military, Thanks for posting it. I was in Elkhart a few weeks ago.
