9th Infantry Manchu

Hi, cleaning up a new bayonet for the collection and saw this marking. Ive not seen it before and could not find anything searching the internet. Its on a rearsenaled SA 1917 by UFH with a beak point blade. Catch is unmarked and I dont see any other markings on the bayo other than the serial number. I dont see any other markings on the guard, but did note the barrel hole is not chamfered like the later ones were. Inspection mark? I do have another bayo with an X12 under an eagle but that is on the ricasso not the guard. Apologies if this has been asked before! Jim

Nope, have not seen a flaming bomb proof mark in that position on the guard before. Is that a 34 under the mark? Likely an inspection mark. You are right about the barrel ring. The first production, 1906-1922, did not to my knowledge use a chamfer on around the ring. That's cool. It's always fun the find things like that.

Here's some interesting information I just found.

1. The early WWII 1905s sometimes can be found with the non-rebated barrel ring. (a term used by Gary Cunningham).

2. In the early production of the WWII 1905, some plants were proof marking every part used in the bayonet including cross guards.

It is possible that your 1917 bayonet had a bad cross guard and it was replaced with an early proof marked, non-rebated cross guard.

It's fun to speculate. At least that is one possibility.

Jim- Interesting stamp for sure. The ordinance bomb w/ what appears to be a liberty bell. New to a lot of us. Thanks for showing this one. SKIP

OK, Skip, I've got to ask. Where do you see a liberty bell?

Marv- Look at the rounded bottom of the ordinance bomb w/ a magnifying glass. The stamp to the left looks just like a bell. Not quite saying it is a bell, but looks like one to me. See what you think. SKIP

I see it, bell with the clapper pointed off to the left...but i think that is actually a number 34 when you orient the flaming bomb correctly.

Skip,

I see what you're referring to, it kind of looks like a Taco Bell. However, if the flaming bomb were in the correct vertical position, you would see a 34 under the bomb.
