SEABEE SON Posted December 24, 2018 Author Share #29 Posted December 24, 2018 A seller photo. Things are bit mixed up here. The Purple Heart was given to him by doctors in the hospital. He was never officially awarded it as the bureaucracy determined he was not injured in combat, when he bailed out of the B-24 on a supply mission when it started leaking 100 octane fuel internally from a large fuel tank used to transport avgas over The Hump. He was banged up mentally and physically that he was discharged on a medical evaluation.

SEABEE SON Posted December 24, 2018 Author Share #46 Posted December 24, 2018 On May 27, 1944, he and his crew were forced to bail out over Burma due to a gas tank leak when flying on a supply run to China. Here are his notes showing the aircraft, 'Paulette', named after actress Paulette Goddard, who christened the aircraft at his airbase in India. The book got the date wrong (circled). SEABEE SON Posted December 24, 2018 Author Share #50 Posted December 24, 2018 After 26 bombing missions in B-24's over hostile targets in Burma, primarily, and after his ordeal bailing out behind enemy lines and walking to safety with the help of Burmese natives, he was assigned to fly air sea rescue in USAAF PBY (OA-10) amphibious planes. Here is a picture of his aircraft and crew.
