patches Posted December 23, 2018 Share #3 Posted December 23, 2018 36th Infantry as mentioned by atb, in WWII, it was the Infantry unit of the 3rd Armored Division, The 3rd Armored Division of the WWII period was what was called a Heavy Armored Division, therefor it had two full numbered Armored Regiments, in the the 3rd Armored Division, they were the 32nd and 33rd Armored Regiments, and then one full numbered Armored Infantry Regiment, the 36th Armored Infantry Regiment. The other ones that were Heavy were the 1st and 2nd Armored Divisions, though the 1st would be redesignated as a Standard in 1944. To me there really wasn't much difference Infantry wise in a standard armored division as they had three separately numbered armored infantry battalions, so, in a regiment like the 36th, and like all infantry regiments, they had three battalions as well. The tank component of a standard armored division on the other hand was three tank battalions, that's their title, Tank Battalion, while the Heavy Armored Divisions had six battalions all told in those two regiments in them, which were not titled Tank, but Armored, therein lies the Heavy aspect, a heavy armored division had a lot more tanks than the standard one. patches Posted December 23, 2018 Share #4 Posted December 23, 2018 Here's a discharged GI formerly with the 36th Armd Inf, 3rd Armd Div (wearing 3rd Armd Div as a combat patch, meaning he was serving in another unit when he was finally sent home). Here he wears the regiment DI of his former unit on the lower lapels as was by regulation from the late 20s to the late-sh 40s, Many GIs going home did this for some reason, even though they are no longer in the regiment The GI posted for some reason only wears the DI on the cap, and not on the lapels, my guess is the portrait you posted was one stateside before the 3rd Armd Div goes overseas rather then a post VE Day one.
