Wake1941 Posted December 14, 2018 Share #7 Posted December 14, 2018 I find it odd there are eyelids sewn on the bottom tabs of the cover
Blueprint Posted December 14, 2018 Share #8 Posted December 14, 2018 I remember that there is a known variant of the cover where each flap has a slit. But one thing which is odd to me is that the seam on the beach side does look more like many "raindrops" rather than the characteristic "saw tooth" seam. kammo-man Posted December 14, 2018 Author Share #11 Posted December 14, 2018 This thread is NOT about sewing. I made it pretty clear in the title. owen
doyler Posted December 14, 2018 Share #12 Posted December 14, 2018 I find it odd there are eyelids sewn on the bottom tabs of the cover It use to be the slotted flap covers were a safe bet as no one was repro-ing them. The one Owen posted looks right in my opinion. The correct weave of the hbt and the base color of the material etc. Granted the edge sewing and the double chain stitch on the reverse/beachside (center seam) are also indicators to look for. manayunkman Posted December 14, 2018 Share #13 Posted December 14, 2018 Owen, Doyler also mentions it. The center seam stitch on the beach side is very unique.

stealthytyler Posted December 15, 2018 Share #16 Posted December 15, 2018 I think you are missing the point. If the stitching is wrong on any item, then there is the potential that the material is not of original era. One of many things to take into account when authenticating an item. kammo-man Posted December 15, 2018 Author Share #17 Posted December 15, 2018 You are missing the point The question I asked was about the fabric It’s MY question Not yours If you want to splinter a thread and start your own about sewing on this cover please be my guest. Do you have anything useful to add about the cammo fabric? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

manayunkman Posted December 15, 2018 Share #19 Posted December 15, 2018 It's because they are looking at it from a cover collectors perspective. If the cover made correctly then the material is real. Another sign of a repro cover is the pac man character (a reasonable facimili) printed into the pattern but I do not see it on this one.
doyler Posted December 15, 2018 Share #20 Posted December 15, 2018 I think you are missing the point. If the stitching is wrong on any item, then there is the potential that the material is not of original era. One of many things to take into account when authenticating an item. Stitching is a part of it but only a part....This shirt doesnt conform to known manufactureing technics(stitching) and is made of original WW2 material.Just because it isn't stitched like a WW2 Marine camo shirt doesn't mean its not real/original......many things were made in Okinawa,Korea,Phillipines etc by tailors.Granted the stitching on these items will have their own similiarities or anomalies.Dont go down the rabbit hole of looking just at stitching or lack of to authenticate an item.It may work for helmet covers but not for all items
manayunkman Posted December 15, 2018 Share #21 Posted December 15, 2018 Nice shirt Ron. And I agree with your line of thinking. This is my opinion but looking for the seam is a lazy way to tell whether the cover is made of real material. I'm going to go take a nap.
