cerick1450 Posted December 8, 2018 Share #1 Posted December 8, 2018 Hello I picked up this 4 hole chin cup.. It appears to be OD #3 with US on the cup area. Is this a late ww2 era item? I did the burn test on a small fragment of the thread from the stitching, and it is cotton.. (does not melt) Thanks
ken88 Posted December 8, 2018 Share #2 Posted December 8, 2018 Quite possibly. But there will never be a definitive answer as it could have been produced in the 50s as well. Here's a late ww2 picture for reference. Of particular interest is this cup's slightly darker OD shade.
Burning Hazard Posted December 8, 2018 Share #3 Posted December 8, 2018 I have a similar one as well, been told they are WWII produced and were used during Operation Varsity Pat

WWII Parachutist Posted December 9, 2018 Share #5 Posted December 9, 2018 Quite possibly. But there will never be a definitive answer as it could have been produced in the 50s as well. Here's a late ww2 picture for reference. Of particular interest is this cup's slightly darker OD shade. This picture has always intrigued me. On his reserve chute, the left snap is a mini LTD, while the right side has the large LTD snap. The ripcord pocket also has a non-standard modification with the elastic sewn oddly. And then on top of that he wears a dark OD chinstrap inverted. His chinstrap is definitely bar tacked based on the angle at which the chin brace is attached to the main body. Most 4 and 5 holers seen in pictures are box stitched at an angle.

Gregory Posted December 9, 2018 Share #7 Posted December 9, 2018 I have a similar one as well, been told they are WWII produced and were used during Operation Varsity Pat Michel De Trez and Peter Hendrikx's books on Market Garden indicate that four-holers were used from Market Garden.
