tredhed2 Posted December 11, 2008 Share #2 Posted December 11, 2008 The 3rd ID zippo (third one on right) has WD copyright logo; the other two don't. The WD copyright (or in this case, R for regulated) is something they are known for - protecting their images.

disneydave Posted December 12, 2008 Share #4 Posted December 12, 2008 USS Dogfish is Pluto. I recall this design was created just after the end of the war, around 1946 or so. It's not in my database but I have seen it around in patch form. The bulldog is for the 3rd Infantry Division and I recall it too was post war, maybe mid-60s if memory serves me right. Again, post war so it wasn't in my database. The 3d Aerial is Jiminy Cricket from Pinocchio, but again, postwar so I don't have any info on it. The other ones you pictured are not Disney designs. Zippo Grunt Posted December 12, 2008 Author Share #5 Posted December 12, 2008 David, thank you for the information. As you stated the designs on these Zippos are pre-war which would be true,as Zippo didn't release any designs showing Disney during the war years. Due to the limited supply of certain metals. I find that some of the images of these Disney Toons are revamped, for the more modern military units,on most of these Zippos. Zippo did give lighters away free to GIs in the second world war, some of these packaged with Luckie's (lucky strikes). Zippo did make many factory designs during the Vietnam Era,to be shipped overseas to Military PXs and US Embassy's. Zippo have a long history with US Military. disneydave Posted December 13, 2008 Share #6 Posted December 13, 2008 The Dental Corps design was created by Disney artist Hank Porter in early 1942. The WASP design is Fifinella, or Fifi for short. She was the female version of the Gremlin. The Fifi / Gremlin offspring were called Widgets, while their cold air high altitude cousins were called Spandules. The WASP design was created by Porter in January 1943. The Seabee insignia was not designed at the Disney Studio - it was designed by Frank Iafrate, a civilian file clerk at the Naval Air Base at Quonset Point. disneydave Posted December 16, 2008 Share #11 Posted December 16, 2008 Well, I searched my database...keep in mind I list only Disney-designed WW II images. I have nothing for any of them, however, the one for the "checkmates" looks like Peg Leg Pete, while the one for teh 61st looks familiar, but I don't have anything for it. I also did a search of my d/b using the key word "bolt" and while there are many designs that used a t-bolt in their insignia, nothing with an animal, dog or otherwise with a t-bolt in its mouth comes up. Sorry.

Johnny Signor Posted July 29, 2009 Share #13 Posted July 29, 2009 The 61st Bulldog with zap in mouth was a Disney created image as was the Checkmates, the Checkmates were known as the "Bomb-A-Toms" in WW2 era and were VB-74, the zippo design is there much latter era designation. The 61 st Fighter Interceptor Sqd lineage goes back to WW2 with the 56th Fighter Group and it was a Fighter squadron at that time flying P-47's. plick27 Posted May 10, 2010 Share #15 Posted May 10, 2010 very late on this but, the Dogfish logo was authorized by Disney. My dad served aboard for 6yrs. and has a period lighter, an ashtray, several patches and a jersey from the boats softball team. at one of the reunions a door prize was an original of the logo signed by Disney. a few years back i had most of the above along with his dog tags, pack of matches w/his pic on it from a med cruise, his dolphins and a pic of the boat matted and framed in a shadow box for him. came out awesome! will try to take some pics next time i'm down there.
