Reversed N.S. Meyer Shield Hallmark

Want to show an error I have not seen before. Photo shows a Navy/USMC Aviation Observer (Navigation) badge sold recently on eBay. It was in pristine condition and mounted on a Meyer card. I almost went after it but noticed the lettering on the shield is a mirror image of what it should be. I think it unlikely that Meyer produced this device with that sort of error.

I think that you will find a LOT of legitimate, WWII vintage insignia made by Meyer with this "defect." I first discovered this same issue myself when I started collecting over 40 years ago. At first, I thought the same, that this must be a fake, but those more experienced than I were asking me why would anyone fake things like 2nd LT bars, and other extremely common insignia? After the discovery, I have seen this shield frequently reversed on Meyer insignia. Since you normally have to use a magnifying glass to clearly see the issue, I would assume that it was simply an oversight by the person approving the production dies. If it was discovered prior to manufacture, I would assume that Meyer didn't see a reason to scrap out a bunch of inventory to correct something that the vast majority of their customer base would never notice.

I can’t speak to the piece posted without full pics, but in regards to the reverse Meyer hallmark, it is a totally legitimate variation.

Personally, I have a few wings in my collection marked that way that are authentic.

There is another thread buried in the forum that is more specific to this topic.

I have always wondered how they screwed that up! LOL But, ditto what the other fellows said, they do have vintage wings with that mirror image hallmark.
